Sentencing for Inmate Convicted of Raping Prison Clerk

An inmate convicted of raping a female prison clerk in her office at a central Pennsylvania prison last summer will be sentenced Aug. 7.

A Centre County judge didn't immediately schedule the sentencing date after 36-year-old Omar Best, of Philadelphia, was convicted Tuesday.

That's because county probation officials must first evaluate Best, who may face a life sentence as a three-strikes violator. Best has a 2012 rape conviction and an indecent assault conviction after a 1996 rape charge was reduced by prosecutors, among other convictions.

Prosecutors said Best choked and raped the 24-year-old clerk at the State Correctional Institution-Rockview in July. Best testified that the sex was consensual and the victim asked to be choked.

The jury took less than two hours to reject Best's claims.
