Schools Consider 4-Day Week

School Officials in the Coatesville Area are considering the possibility of a four-day school week to prevent budget cuts from school programs and staff members, according to the Daily Local News.

The decision depends on the state subsidies that are approved by the Legislature. The Daily Local News reports that the Coatesville Area is taking some time to seriously consider this idea and the Great Valley School District may agree with them.

The idea of a four-day school week isn’t a new concept.  In fact, 120 schools throughout the nation have four-day school weeks.

Although the Pennsylvania School Code requires schools to be open for 180 days throughout the school year, there are some exceptions to the rules.  Instead of meeting requirements for school days, the district could measure a student's time in class by hours.

This would mean a longer school day (about an hour and 20 minutes longer for elementary schools and 45 minutes longer for middle and high schools), the Daily Local News reports.

Coatesville Area officials estimate that they would save about $1.7 million a year if this change occurs. However, those who oppose this change say that the savings would be minimal, according to the Daily Local News.
