Scholarship Named After Tyler Clementi

Gay Rutgers student who committed suicide after being bullied honored

A new scholarship has been established to remember a New Jersey college student whose suicide last year sparked a national discussion about bullying of gay youth.

The Point Foundation says the Tyler Clementi Point Scholarship will be awarded to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students.

Clementi killed himself in September 2010, days after his roommate and another student at Rutgers University allegedly used a webcam to spy on him during a liaison with another man. Lawyers for the two suspects have said they're not guilty of any crime.

Point bills itself as the nation's largest scholarship-granting organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students.

Clementi's parents, Joe and Jane Clementi of Ridgewood, are supporting the effort.
