SEPTA Increases Security Following Possible Terror Threat

SEPTA has increased security following an announcement made by Iraq's prime minister warning of an ISIS plot to attack subway systems in the United States. And although U.S. officials are disputing the credibility of the alleged threat, the transportation agency isn't taking any chances.

SEPTA Police have increased officer presence across their subway system following the possible threat brought to light early Thursday when Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi said he was informed by officials in Baghdad that ISIS planned to attack U.S. and French subways.

"It seems like it would be an easy target because there are so many subways spread out over so many cities," said SEPTA commuter Steve Bright.

Local leaders say there's no evidence that the Philadelphia region would be a target.

Most riders seem to agree, but still welcome the extra security measures.

"I don't necessarily believe there's going to be a threat here, for instance," said commuter Casey Cartwright. "But obviously, there's always due diligence, so it would be nice to see something like that.

SEPTA Police Force employs roughly 265 officers, but are assisted by the Philadelphia Police when needed.
