A young mother is dead and her boy hospitalized after a SEPTA bus plowed into several pedestrians crossing a South Philadelphia street.
The 29-year-old woman, identified by police sources as Sheena White, was leading her 8-year-old son and a 32-year-old man with special needs across Washington Avenue at 15th Street around 7:30 p.m. Friday when they were hit by a Route 27 bus, Philadelphia Police tell NBC10.
They were in the crosswalk at the time and were struck as the bus made a left onto Washington Avenue, officials said.
"They ran in front of the bus and she was caught by the front of the bus," said Capt. Anthony Ginaldi. The woman was pulled under the front tire, he said.
When officers arrived, they found the boy trying to revive his mother. But her injuries were too severe and she died at the scene, officials said.
The boy was taken to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where he remains. His condition has not been released.
Police say the man they were with ran away from the scene. Officers located him a short time later.

There no were passengers on-board the bus at the time of the crash. On-board surveillance video has also been reviewed.
"You see the bus video, you can see the front of the bus actually strike her," Ginaldi said.
Detectives said the driver tried to stop, but couldn't in time.
No charges have been filed, according to officials. Detectives from the police department's Accident Investigation Division continue to investigate the incident.
