Rte. 130 Is Dangerous Road for Pedestrians

The Burlington Pike is New Jersey’s deadliest road and ranks among the Top 3 most dangerous roads in the Tri-State area for pedestrians, according to a study.

Between 2006 and 2008 nine walkers were killed along the six-lane highway that connects Philadelphia and New York City.

The road, which goes through most of Burlington County is a well-traveled highway with a lot of stores -- on the other hand it is designed for fast moving cars. There are only a few pedestrian crossings.

“Pedestrian improvements offer a tremendous bang for the buck,”  according to the Tri-State Transportation Campaign -- a policy watchdog organization that carried out the study.  The complete report is available on their Web site.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation started several projects to make Rte. 130 safer and improvements in cities along the route like Bordentown, Burlington City, Edgewater Park are already on the way, according to Philly.com

Runner-Up in New Jersey was the White Horse Pike in Atlantic County with seven pedestrian deaths. The most dangerous roads in the study were located in Long Island, N.Y.
