Crash Closes Route 47 in Cape May County

A car wreck causes a traffic nightmare for people wrapping up their Memorial Day Weekend

It was a tough drive home for folks leaving the Wildwoods and other points south this Memorial Day.

Route 47 was closed in both directions near Natali Vineyards in Goshen after a one car crash, Middle Township Police told NBC10.

The crash happened around 9:40 a.m. when a car carrying four teens from Philadelphia rolled over and took down some wires, cops said.

William Swallow, 19, was driving the car north on Route 47 when he drove off the road, struck a pole, three trees and then flipped over onto the roof of the vehicle, according to a press release from Middle Township Police  Tuesday morning.

Around 2:30 p.m. the road was reopened after crews fixed wires that were taken down during the crash, cops said.

Cops say that Swallow said he fell asleep at the wheel. He was given a ticket for careless driving.

One of his passengers, 19-year-old Christopher Gross, was airlifted to Atlantic Care Medical Center as a precaution, police said.
