Rip Currents Restrict Swimmers at NJ Beaches

Many New Jersey beaches remained closed for swimming on Sunday, as Hurricane Danielle continued to spawn rough waves and rip currents.

The National Weather Service says swells kicked up by the storm have continued to build as the weekend progressed. And they expect the rough conditions to continue through at least Monday.

At beaches where swimming was allowed Sunday, officials were warning swimmers to stay in areas where lifeguards are stationed.

Dozens of rescues were reported across the state on this weekend, as lifeguards and good Samaritans came to the aid of struggling swimmers. In Atlantic City officials say there were a least 52 rescues. In Ocean City 5 swimmers were rescuded from rough waters. In Brigantine 6 people were rescued.

Beachgoers also were told not to swim alone - even if waters don't appear to be risky- because the tides and currents can change quickly and unexpectedly.
