Fire Victims Denied Access to Damaged Apartment Building

The apartment building is set to be demolished Monday

Residents who were forced out of their home after a fire destroyed their West Philadelphia apartment building are demanding to return to retrieve their belongings before the building is demolished Monday.

Dozens of neighbors and animal activists held a protest at Windermere Court Apartments at 48th and Walnut Streets. They want access to the gutted building to recover their belongings and pets they say survived a fire last month.

The owners are telling residents the building has been sealed by License and Inspection for demolition. But residents want answers from the city about the actual condition of the some the apartments.

A five-alarm fire destroyed the 4-story apartment building on January 10th.

It took more than 100 firefighters almost five hours to bring the fire under control.

Residents say they will hold another protest in front of the building Monday.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
