Republican Race for Mayor: Cliffhanger

Although, for the democrats, Michael Nutter blew away his competition.

Incumbent Mayor Michael Nutter brushed off a longshot challenger in the Philadelphia mayoral Democratic primary, but we may not know who he's running against until next week. And that's the best-case scenario.

On the Republican ticket for Mayor, only 53 votes separated candidates John Featherman and Karen Brown on Wednesday afternoon. That's with 97-percent of the precincts counted. More than one thousand votes -- absentee, alternative and provisional ballots --  still need to be tallied.

The District 2 Democratic primary race for City Council may also be ultimately decided on the uncounted ballots. Fewer than 100 votes separated Kanyatta Johnson from Barbara Capozzi late Wednesday.

On Friday, the City Commissioners start the official count of the primary votes. That process normally takes about a week, but can take longer. In 2007, the official count in the race between City Council candidates David Oh and Jack Kelly didn't get finished until two-and-a-half weeks after election day.
