Bus Strikes, Kills Man Walking His Bike

A man was killed after he was hit by a bus in an area beach town yesterday.

Delaware State Police say a 37-year-old man was killed when he was hit by a Delaware Transit bus in Rehoboth Beach.

Police say the crash occurred Thursday night along Route 1. The man was walking his bicycle in the road with his back to traffic. They say the bus was changing lanes to make a left turn on Shuttle Road when it hit the man from behind.

The man was taken to Beebe Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His name was withheld pending notification of family members.

The bus was out of service at the time and the driver was not injured.

The cyclist was walking without any sort of flashlight and there was no light attached to his bike, according to police.

DelDOT Secretary Shailen Bhatt released a statement the driver was taken to a local medical facility for routine drug and alcohol testing.

“Everyone at Delaware Transit Corporation deeply regrets this loss of life and our deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of this individual,” Bhatt said.
