Where Have the Most Red Light Camera Tickets Been Issued?

And the busiest red light camera intersection in Philadelphia is...

Drivers in one particular part of the city were busted for more red light tickets than anywhere lease last year.

For the third consecutive year the red light cameras along Broad Street/S Penn Square on the south side of Philadelphia’s City Hall were the busiest this year, according to a study released by the Philadelphia Parking Authority Monday morning.

Those cameras alone were responsible for 22,611 citations from April 1, 2012 to March 31, 2013, up from 14,159 citations the year period before.

Coming in at a close second with more than 20,000 citations in 2012 was Broad Street/JFK Boulevard on the north side of City Hall.

These intersections along with the rest of the city’s five busiest red light camera intersections -- Broad and Vine Streets (19,837 tickets) in Center City, Roosevelt Boulevard and Levick Street (15,878 tickets) in Northeast Philly and Island Avenue and Linbergh Boulevard (15,637 tickets) in Southwest Philly -- all saw more tickets issued last year, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic.

The PPA reports that the red light program took in nearly $9.6 million in income over the year with the money going to PennDOT.

Besides making money, the goal of the red light camera program is to reduce potential crashes.

“So far, the red light camera program has achieved the most important goal -- highway safety,” said AAA Mid-Atlantic spokeswoman Jenny Robinson. “But as violations drop off, new intersections keep being added -- are red light cameras the best safety solution for every location?”

At City’s Hall’s two busiest intersections there were just 22 crashes from 2008 to 2012 while the other intersections had between 56 to 70 crashes over that same period.
