Two busloads of Red Cross workers took off for Washington D.C. Monday morning.
The employees left the American Red Cross Blood Services building on Spring Garden Street at 7a.m. and plan to arrive at the American Red Cross E-Street Donor Center by noon.
Led by the president of the American Federation of Teachers, Randi Weingarten, they will hold a press conference, rally, and informational picketing. They will also release the Red Cross Expose, “Protecting Our Nation’s Blood Safety and Defending the Rights of Blood Services Workers.”
250 Red Cross nurses and donor collection assistants that staff blood drives in Pennsylvania and New Jersey began their strike on May 24. The strike stems from failed negotiations between workers and management over staffing, scheduling, training and collective bargaining rights.
The local workers are a small fraction of the 3,000 Red Cross employees nationwide currently in labor disputes.
