Reading, Math Teachers May Be Cut in Del. Schools

Jobs paid with federal stimulus money at risk

Many reading and math teacher jobs in Delaware are at risk, even as the state has won an infusion of $100 million in federal funding to turn around failing schools and boost student achievement.

In the Christina School District, some of the jobs will be eliminated because they were paid with federal stimulus money for the past year, and that funding has been reduced. Other districts are doing the same.

All Delaware elementary schools added reading coaches in a program started under Gov. Ruth Ann Minner. Middle schools added math coaches. Supporters say those jobs have been critical in narrowing the achievement gap.

The jobs aren't included in Gov. Jack Markell's budget for next year, though. A spokesman for the governor says local school districts can decide their own staffing priorities.
