Rash of Burglaries in Ritzy Rittenhouse

Burglars hit 12 homes over past few weeks

A rash of home burglaries have authorities busy in the Rittenhouse section of Philadelphia.

Over the past few weeks, 12 homes have been burglarized with items like cash, IDs, jewelry and notebook computers being taken, police said.

In each case, the robberies happened during the day, when no one was at home, and the burglars were able to bypass secure doors at the front of the buildings, police said.

"We believe they may be using a swipe card to get by the front door," Capt. Dennis Wilson said.

Leads were cold until last Wednesday when a security camera caught two suspicious men.

Investigators are not calling the men suspects nor are they sure if all of the incidents are related, but Capt. Wilson says they would like to speak with the men. They are described to have facial hair, one with a grey beard.

Police have been posting notices on doors throughout the neighborhood to remind residents to lock windows and doors.

Some residents say they're surprised by the break-ins, since the area is pretty safe.

"It definitely is concerning," said resident Kris Traynor. "I know my building, it seems to be secure, but I know sometimes the back door may be open and sometimes you don't know who's coming in."

Others are making sure they better utilize their security systems.

"I just started using my deadbolt," said Molly Kreider.

Still, Capt. Wilson says the best thing to do is keep your eyes on the lookout.

"They definitely can call 911 when they see a suspicious person," Capt. Wilson said. "That would really help us."
