Rape Suspect Makes Car-Crashing Getaway: Police

Police nabbed a man accused of raping a woman Sunday morning and then crashing into several neighborhood cars as he made his getaway.

"I heard a big bang and I woke up, my mom was screaming to my dad, 'Please get up! Someone hit your car,' " Amanda Hampel said. She ran outside to find a wrecked car and the driver, in her front yard.

"I messed up my life. I messed up my life," the man told her.

He'd driven the wrong way down Hegerman St. in the Wissinoming section of the city, hitting and flattening tires on eight cars. The man got out of the wrecked car, and seemed ambivalent before taking off on foot, according to Hampel.

"He came back like four times…he would walk away, talk on his phone for a little bit and he would come back."

Police arrested Jose Miranda, 31, at his home later in the day and charged him with rape, statutory sex assault, false imprisonment and related offenses.

The victim was being treated at a local hospital.
