Coming Together for Boy Who Nearly Drowned

Radnor community raises money for boy who remains in a coma

Friends, family and complete strangers weren’t deterred by some rain Wednesday as they came together to raise money in the honor of a 12-year-old boy who remained in a medically-induced coma following a near drowning last month.

Logan Schweiter nearly drowned last week while playing in floodwaters with two other friends. The friends made it out but Logan was swept away in the current.

The boy suffered brain damage, family members said.

As Logan fought to regain consciousness his mother was touched by the outpouring of support at the Berwyn McDonald's Wednesday as people lined up out the door for food and lined their cars up to be washed despite the rain.

“It's absolutely humbling the support and love and prayers that we have gotten from people we know dearly and people we barely even know,” Melissa Schweiter said. “It's beyond words how thankful we are.”

The firefighters who rescued Logan and performed CPR on the boy stood with others raising money in his honor.

“I kinda didn't even really think, it was more instinct than anything,” rescuer Eric Chobert said. "I just thought 'we need to get him out of the water... I jumped in, didn't think twice about it.”

All the proceeds from the dinner and car wash went towards Logan's medical expenses. And day by day Logan is progressing, according to his mother.

“We got a reaction when someone squeezed his finger,” Melissa said. “He's opening his eyes and slowly starting to move them.”
