Raccoon With Rabies Bites Local Resident

A raccoon with rabies bit a Cherry Hill resident in the heel, according to the Camden County Health Department.

The Camden County Health Department is warning Cherry Hill residents about a rabid raccoon found in the area.

On Wednesday, the raccoon was recovered from the Barclay Farm Section of Cherry Hill Township. Members of the Health Department say the animal tested positive for rabies. They also say a local resident is recovering from being bitten by the animal in the heel.

“Although rabies is a serious illness, it can be prevented by early treatment,” said Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez, liaison to the Camden County Health Department. “If you have been bitten or scratched by a raccoon it is important that you seek immediate medical attention.”

Residents are urged to keep vaccinations up to date for all dogs, cats and ferrets. You should also keep your pets under direct supervision so they don’t come in contact with wild animals. If your pet is bitten by a wild animal, seek veterinary assistance for the animal immediately. You should contact your local animal control agency to remove any stray animals from your neighborhood.

Keep your distance away from wild animals, such as raccoons, skunks and foxes. Don’t handle, feed or unintentionally attract wild animals with open garbage cans or litter. Never adopt wild animals or bring them into your home and don’t try to nurse sick animals to health. Instead, call animal control or an animal rescue agency. Finally, teach children to use the same precautions when dealing with wild animals.
