β€œBait” Puppy Survives Dog Fighting Operation

A black and white pit bull puppy was rescued from a dog fighting operation, according to the Animal Alliance of New Jersey.

The Alliance reports that the dog, named Kelly, has injuries that indicate she was used as a β€œbait dog.”

During a dogfight, the bait dog is thrown in between the two larger, fighting dogs.

Bait dogs are small and submissive and are often torn apart by the fighting dogs who ultimately redirect their aggression toward each other, according to the rescue group.

They are also often abandoned when the dog fighters no longer deem them useful.

Kelly was picked up by Animal Control in Philadelphia after she was spotted staggering through the streets. She had large wounds to her legs, head and ears, which are common injuries for bait dogs.

She also had a broken lower jaw with the bone exposed and infected.

"She is timid but friendly and gives happy tail wags when you talk to her. Kelly is sweet and affectionate and Animal Alliance is desperate to give her a second chance at the wonderful life she deserves," the group said in a press release.

Kelly is currently receiving medical care and recovering from jaw surgery. She'll be ready for adoption in about six weeks. If you're interested, contact Animal Alliance through their website or by phone: 609-818-1952.
