Puppies Left in Carrier Along Remote Road

Dogs died after being rescued by a passerby and now police are investigating if they were intentionally abandoned

Two puppies died after being found locked inside a carry kennel along the side of a remote Berks County, Pa. road.

Now, police are investigating whether they were abandoned on purpose.

Cherrylann Clavijo was walking along Oak Road in Upper Macungie Township, Pa. last Thursday afternoon when she saw the small carrier sitting on top of an earthen wall.

The woman says she climbed up to see what was inside and found the orange-colored fox-furred puppies.

"One of the dogs came walking out," Clavijo said. "The other dog had some marks on his head…a little blood."

Clavijo rushed the injured dog to a vet and called on police to rescue the other. But by the time an officer arrived, the puppy had perished, officials said.

The dog Clavijo rescued later died while receiving medical attention.

Authorities aren't sure how long the dogs sat along the side of the road or if they were left on purpose, but veterinarians did discover they were infected with Parvo. The common intestinal disease is curable, but treatment can be expensive, officials said.

"It's an act of cruelty," she said. "They sure did not deserve to locked in a cage to be left in this area to die."

Anyone with information related to the case is asked to call Berks-Lehigh Regional Police at 610.683.8740.
