Psychiatric Hospital Worker Suspended After Patient Attacked Roommate

An employee at Trenton Psychiatric Hospital has been suspended after she missed an hourly room check, and then a patient attacked her roommate and blinded her.

New Jersey Human Services spokeswoman Ellen Lovejoy tells NJ.com the worker faces several internal charges, including neglect of duty.

The worker's name has not been released.

Authorities say the main offense was failing to make an hourly room check at 4 a.m. on Sept. 19.

At about 3 a.m. that day, 54-year-old patient Florence Bailey allegedly assaulted her roommate, 55-year-old Gloria Gervase, punching and choking her and causing a loss of vision.

The suspect is now at the Mercer County Jail.
