Prison Guard Shot to Death on Way to Work

The guard was shot to death on the doorstep of his North Philly home

A Philly prison guard was on his way to work late Sunday night when he was shot and killed in the doorway of his North Philly home.

Lonnie Rowland, 36, was shot at 10:50 p.m. on the doorstep of his home on the 2400 block of W. Elkhart Street, police say. He died at 11:07 p.m.

The victim’s grandmother told NBC Philadelphia that she was upstairs when she heard multiple gunshots.

The prison guard worked at the Cambria Community Center on the 2800 block of North 17th Street, which is part of the Philadelphia Prison System’s Alternative and Special Detention.

The Cambria Community Center is a minimum security prison, which houses inmates on work release and inmates serving sentences on weekends.

Philadelphia police are searching for the gunman. There have been no arrests and there is no description of a possible suspect.
