Passenger Dies When Porsche Slams Into Tree

A man died and another suffered serious injuries when the sports car they were in went off a South Jersey roadway and struck a tree on Thanksgiving Day.

The crash occurred around 4:35 p.m. Thursday on Spruce Avenue in Bargaintown when the driver, 62-year-old township resident Anthony Ponzio, failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway, said Egg Harbor Township Police.

Ponzio's 2000 Porsche Boxster slammed into a large tree, killing passenger Nevil Tauro. Medics pronounced the 20-year-old Absecon resident dead at the scene.

Ponzio remained hospitalized Friday in critical condition, but further details on his injuries were not disclosed.

Investigators detoured traffic for about four hours while the crash was investigated. It did not appear that any other vehicles were involved in the accident.

The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation.
