Police in Berks County say two teenagers had to swim to safety after their car went airborne and landed in a pond during a race with another vehicle.
Oley Township police Officer Michael Lentz says the crash happened Monday afternoon and left the car partially submerged in the pond. He says 18-year-old Zachary Fulmer and his 16-year-old passenger weren't hurt and were able to swim safely to shore.
Lentz told the Reading Eagle that the teenage driver was apparently racing another driver when they approached an intersection near Moravian School and Deturk Roads.
"The driver blew through the intersection and traveled about 40 yards up a field and went airborne into the pond, about 75 feet from the bank," Lentz told the paper.
Fulmer told police his brakes failed.
The other driver fled and police are still investigating the crash.
Fire department crews eventually removed the car from the pond using a tow truck.
