Tip Leads Police to Person of Interest in Shooting of State Trooper

Police on Thanksgiving tracked down the last person of interest they were searching for in connection with the shooting earlier this week of a Pennsylvania State Trooper.

They had been searching for Kaymer Lewis, who they said was not considered a suspect in the shooting, since Tuesday, after Trooper Patrick Casey was shot in the shoulder, allegedly by 17-year-old Giovanni Cotto, on I-676 in Center City after a car chase and crash.

Pennsylvania State Trooper Patrick Casey was released from the hospital Wednesday — with a bullet still lodged in his shoulder from a wild shootout on a Philadelphia expressway Tuesday.

Lewis, police said, was believed to have been in the car with Cotto at the time of the shooting. They said they wanted to find him to talk with him as a witness. On Thursday, State Police said that Philadelphia Police had tracked down Lewis in a store in North Philadelphia after receiving a tip about his whereabouts.

Police said Lewis was arrested on an outstanding probation warrant and taken to the 18th District in West Philadelphia. They said he was cooperative when State Police interviewed him about the shooting.

Casey, 31, the wounded trooper, was released from Hahnemann University Hospital on Wednesday with a bullet still lodged in his shoulder. He was in good spirits as he left the hospital.

"I'm feeling all right. I just want to thank everybody for all the prayers and support," Casey told reporters outside. "Happy to be going home for Thanksgiving, and let's go Eagles."

Cotto, meanwhile, was arraigned Wednesday morning and being held on $3 million bail.
