Police Taser, Shoot Woman After She Stabs Officer

Taser couldn't stop woman from stabbing officer

A woman was shot after she allegedly stabbed a Philadelphia Police officer.

The incident happened along the 2500 block of West Montgomery Avenue in North Philadelphia just before 5 p.m. Tuesday, Lt. Frank Venore said.

A 23-year-old woman had assaulted her aunt and then attempted to break into her home, when police arrived to intervene, Lt. Vanore said.

The woman was wielding a knife and refused to drop the weapon, police said.

Police then attempted to taser the woman to take her into custody, but she was still able stab one of the officers, police said.

"The female just produced a knife out of nowhere and just came toward the officers," Lt. Vanore said. "He tried to use a less deadly force and it did not work out for him."

Officer Leon Campbell, Jr., 33, from the 22nd District was stabbed twice. His partner then opened fire on the woman hitting her twice in the chest, police said.

Both Campbell, Jr. and woman were taken to Temple University Hospital for treatment. The woman was last listed in critical, but stable condition. The officer is in good condition.
