Teen Pulled Gun Before Cops Opened Fire: Police

Suspect pulled a 9mm Baretta on officers and is now in critical condition, police say

Three Philadelphia Police officers discharged their weapons in the Frankford section of Philadelphia, hitting a suspect Saturday evening.

The shooting happened on the 4900-block of Grisom Street at about 7:30 p.m. Saturday, according to police.

Police say officers saw the 19-year-old man put a handgun into his waistband. As the officers approached the suspect, the teen ran with the police in pursuit. Inside a vacant lot the suspect pulled the handgun from his waistband, according to police.

All three officers told the man to drop the gun and when he didn't police fired several shots. The suspect dropped his gun after he was shot in the torso, according to authorities.

The suspect was brought to Frankford Hospital in critical condition. No police were injured.

Police recovered a 9mm Beretta from the ground where the man fell. The officers involved were on special detail looking for robbery suspects, as a few armed robberies had occurred in the Frankford area, authorities say.

The shooting happened two days after men shot at two Philadelphia police officers injuring one-- Officer Kevin Livewell.
