Police Shoot, Kill Knife-Wielding Man

New Jersey's attorney general is investigating a police-involved shooting in which a man was killed during a standoff in South Brunswick.

Acting Attorney General John Hoffman says a member of the Middlesex County Special Operations Response Team fatally shot 28-year-old Andrew Murnieks inside his South Brunswick residence.

Hoffman says police responded to the home Wednesday night and were told by Murniek's mother that her son was schizophrenic and had not been taking his medication.

Hoffman says Murniek raised a knife to responding officers before the standoff ensued.

Hoffman says efforts by a crisis negotiator to resolve the situation failed, and Murniek was shot after assaulting an officer.

This is the fourth police shooting in New Jersey since last Monday and the third in which a suspect was killed.
