Police Officer Shoots, Kills Homeless Man

Authorities in central Pennsylvania have identified a homeless man shot and killed by a police officer after officials said he threatened officers with a 9-inch knife.

The (Lancaster) Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster New Era said police identified the man Tuesday as 35-year-old Gregory Stephen Bayne.

Police said an officer responded to a report of a man urinating in public shortly after 7 a.m. Monday in Lancaster. Chief Keith Sadler says the man pulled a knife as the officer checked his identification and a chase ensued. Sadler says he was given chances to drop his weapon, but instead lunged at an officer with the knife and was shot.

Lancaster County District Attorney Craig Stedman says he's reviewed surveillance video of the incident and preliminarily determined the shooting was ``entirely justified.''
