Suspect Who Escaped Custody Surrenders to Police: Officials

A man who investigators say escaped police custody surrendered to authorities with a little help from his father and his attorney, according to officials.

Michael Mimms, 27, was placed back in custody without incident Sunday.

Mimms was arrested Saturday in Willingboro, New Jersey. Investigators say Mimms was wanted out of Delaware County, Pennsylvania and was charged with unlawfully possessing a handgun at the time of his arrest.

After he was processed, Mimms was taken to the Burlington County Jail. Upon arriving shortly after 8 a.m., Mimms got away from the transporting officer and fled into downtown Mount Holly, New Jersey, police said. Mimms had on socks but no shoes and was handcuffed to a transport belt at the time of his escape, according to officials.

On Sunday Mimms, who was still on the loose, called his father who contacted his attorney, according to investigators. Mimms was given a ride to his attorney's law office. The attorney then took Mimms to Willingboro Police who placed him back in custody around 6 p.m., officials said.

Mimms is currently lodged in the Burlington County Jail. Police have not yet revealed the additional charges against him.
