Police Chase Ends in Crash After Driver Drags Officer: Officials

A police officer is recovering after investigators say he was dragged by a vehicle which fled during a traffic stop in Philadelphia Wednesday night.

The ordeal began when police stopped a vehicle they believed was stolen on the 1600 block of Granite Street at 8:35 p.m. The unidentified driver then allegedly sped off, dragging a police officer halfway down the block.

Another police vehicle pursued leading to a chase which ended when the suspect crashed into another vehicle traveling on the 1900 block of Pratt Street, officials said.

The suspect suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital by police. Investigators say he will be placed in custody and charged with assault on police after receiving treatment.

The driver inside the civilian vehicle also suffered minor injuries while the officer who was dragged suffered a laceration to his right hand as well as injuries to his back and right shoulder. He was taken to Jeanes Hospital and is expected to be released soon.
