Police Arrest 1 of 3 Suspects in Taj Murder

Police have arrested one of the three men wanted for a deadly carjacking in an Atlantic City parking lot.

Phillip Byrd, 20, was arrested at a home in Camden on Tuesday night, according Atlantic City police. It is unknown who the home belongs to. He is being held in lieu of $1 million cash bail.

Byrd and two other men, Eric Darden, 20 and Raheem Simmons, 18, allegedly used a gun to force Sunil Rattu and his girlfriend Radha Ghetia into their vehicle in the parking lot of the Trump Taj Mahal casino around 8 a.m. Sunday.

Police say the men then forced the couple to drive to an alley a few blocks away before shooting them both, killing Rattu.

Earlier that morning, authorities say that the suspects drove a stolen Saturn Ion into the lot at the Hilton. There, a female Bally’s employee says she was approached by the men. Luckily, she was able to escape a potential attack, but not before getting the Saturn’s tag number.

Surveillance video of Byrd, Darden and Simmons in the lot, as well as the Taj, was released Tuesday.

Byrd was taken into custody not long after. Investigators found a small-caliber pistol, but say the pistol is not consistent with the shooting.

Police recovered the stolen Saturn near the Ferry Avenue Patco station in Camden.

Byrd is facing various charges including felony murder and carjacking/kidnapping.

He is scheduled to make his first appearance in court on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.

The other two suspects, Eric Darden and Raheem Simmons, remained at large Wednesday.
