Plane Broke Apart Before Crashing Near Gettysburg

Federal investigators say a small plane broke apart in the air before it crashed last month near Gettysburg, killing the pilot and his only passenger.

The National Transportation Safety Board report says debris from the plane was spread along a nearly half-mile path leading to the crash site in Butler Township, Adams County. The plane's wings, rudder and horizontal stabilizer were found 1,000 feet from the main wreckage, the fuselage and engines.

The pilot, 46-year-old Michael C. Bronzburg, and his girlfriend's daughter, 17-year-old Miranda Rose, died in the pre-dawn crash on Dec. 26. They lived in Catawissa, took off in Bloomsburg and were headed to Summerville Airport in South Carolina.

The NTSB's preliminary report says investigators plan to focus on the Piper PA-30 Twin Comanche's engines and propellers.
