Plan to Keep Airline Cockpits Safe

Pa. lawmaker pitches new legislation

A Pennsylvania congressman has unveiled new airline safety legislation that would require planes to have secondary barriers protecting the cockpit.

Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick says the barriers are a simple and inexpensive way to keep passengers and pilots safe from a 9/11-type of terrorist attack.

The Republican lawmaker discussed the bill Monday in suburban Philadelphia at a memorial to victims of the attacks.

He was joined by several commercial pilots and local resident Ellen Saracini. Her husband, Victor, was captain of one of the planes that struck the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

Authorities in New York believe they found a five-foot piece of a wing from a plane that hit one of the twin towers.
