Searching for Answers After Fire Kills 10 Dogs

Questions arise after dogs, mostly pit bulls, killed in fire

A garage fire in Delaware County killed 10 dogs, and officials are investigating whether the structure was an illegal kennel.

The fire broke out around 9:30 a.m. Thursday on the 200 block of Cherry Street.

Firefighters in Sharon Hill found 10 dead dogs -- including nine pit bulls -- inside detached garage on the property.

It appeared that a propane heater caused the blaze, officials said.

What was unclear is if the garage was being used for breeding or possible training. However, there were never any disturbance calls to the property prior to the fire.

No charges were immediately filed. The state dog warden should know more about any possible charges next week.
