Public Can Vote on Bike Share Station Locations

As Philadelphia prepares to become the next city to offer a bike share program, officials are asking the public to weigh in on the locations of the 60 future stations.

There are more than 100 prospective station locations on PhillyBikeShare.com -- which is calling for the public to submit feedback on the potential spots before Oct. 20.

"It will help make it possible for all of you, for me, our fellow citizens and visitors to Philadelphia to take advantage of bike sharing and bicycling, which we all know is the best way to get around our city," said Russell Meddin, founder of Bike Share Philadelphia.

The current map of stations is based on population, employment and space availability, according to PhillyBikeShare.Com. The proposed locations dot the entire city, spanning from Temple University's campus south to Morris Street and from the area surrounding Univeristy of Pennsylvania east to the Delaware River.

Users will not be expected to wear a helmet, but it’s highly recommended for safety purposes.

The project lead on the program, Aaron Ritz, said he expects cycling will be safer once there are more bicyclists on the road.

"We expect the downward trend or at least a flat-lining trend in total crashes as we put more cyclists on the streets," Ritz said.

The bicycles will be owned by the City of Philadelphia and maintained by the city’s chosen company, Bicycle Transit Systems.  The program is expected to launch spring 2015.
