Philly’s Population Up, May Mean More Money

The Census Bureau has some good news for Philadelphia. After decades of population loss, the city has stopped shrinking. That's according to revised census estimates.

On Monday, the city received a letter from the Census Bureau raising the 2008 population estimate by about 93,000.

The new estimate of Philadelphia's 2008 population is 1,540,351 people.

Mayor Michael Nutter says that highlights the importance of the 2010 Census. He says the city would get more federal funding if it can prove it's growing.

The city's population peaked at more than 2 million people in 1950, then began a 50-year decline.
