Philly Won't Appeal Firefighters Health Fund Order

Mayor Michael Nutter says his administration will not appeal a judge's ruling that the city must pay millions of dollars into the firefighters union's cash-strapped health care fund.

Nutter says he disagrees with the ruling, which he called "a split decision and only temporary in nature,'' but decided it was more important to focus on the city's overall appeal.

He said if that is granted, the city "will recover the money paid to the health fund under this order.''

The firefighters union said the fund had shrunk from $28 million in 2009 to $2 million amid a contract dispute over the past four years.

The judge ordered more money paid into the fund but denied the union's bid to force full implementation of a 2010 arbitration award.
