Philly Shows Love to ‘The Roots'

The hometown band will be the subject of a new mural in town

Philadelphia is showing some brotherly love to hometown band The Roots.

Officials announced Monday that the Grammy-winning hip-hop group will be the subject of a mural in the city. The eight-month project will include a storefront art studio and arts education programs for students.

Ahmir ``?uestlove'' (QWEST'-luv) Thompson and Tarik (tah-REEK' ``Black Thought'' Trotter formed The Roots in 1987 after meeting at Philadelphia's High School for Creative and Performing Arts. They are the house band for ``Late Night with Jimmy Fallon'' on NBC.

The city's Mural Arts Program is soliciting proposals for the design at www.muralarts.org. The mural is planned for a funky shopping area known as South Street, and is expected to be unveiled next summer.

It will be one of more than 3,500 murals across the city.
