Philly Sheriff's Office Debts

The Philadelphia Sheriff's Office is trying to settle $30 million in debt

State officials are trying to pay millions in sheriff's sale proceeds to the former owners of Philadelphia properties that have been auctioned off over the last decade.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports more than 2,000 property owners have been added to a state Treasury Department list of parties owed money in accounts that had been held by the city sheriff's office.

About $30 million in unclaimed cash had been in sheriff's office accounts.

The Inquirer report says the money was from the sale of properties that netted more than the value of their debts when sold for unpaid mortgages, taxes or bills.

A lawyer filing a class action lawsuit against the city and sheriff's office says many property owners weren't told they were entitled to the money.
