Philly Schools to Lay Off 141 Workers

The School District of Philadelphia mailed layoff notices to more than 140 of its employees on Wednesday

It is a Christmas shock that’s turned some people’s holiday cheer upside down. Now, one group vows to fight back.

Starting Jan. 1st, the School District of Philadelphia will officially part ways with 141of its employees. According to a Philadelphia Inquirer report, the district began mailing off layoff notices on Wednesday to several school nurses, library assistants, non-teaching assistants and other employees.

Earlier this year, the district announced it would be laying-off some of its employees, but notices weren’t sent out until this week.

Jerry Jordan, president of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, told the Inquirer that the group will fight the district’s decision.

"I find it reprehensible that schools, which already made drastic program and personnel cuts last spring because of severely reduced budgets, have again been told by the administration to cut staff members who play vital roles protecting students' safety, security, health and well-being every day," Jordan said in a statement to the Inquirer.

A district spokesman has not yet commented on the layoffs.
