Philly Reopens the South Street Bridge

The newly reconstructed South Street Bridge is set to reopen Saturday afternoon on Nov. 6.

The bridge, which connects University City and Southwest Center City, was closed down in December 2008 due to serious deterioration.

New features include wider sidewalks, a mid-block signalized pedestrian and bike crossing at the Schuylkill River trail, wider green-colored bike lanes and a reduction in vehicle lanes.

Pedestrians and bike riders will be able to access the bridge at 2 p.m. while motorists will be able to use it starting at 5 p.m.

A bridge dedication ceremony featuring Mayor Michael Nutter and other officials is set for that day at 3 p.m.

For more information on the reopening, check out the South Street Bridge Reconstruction Project website.
