Philly Police Faces Drug Corruption Trial

A sweeping police corruption case starting Monday in Philadelphia largely is expected to be a showdown between the accused drug investigators and about 20 drug suspects.

But there's one exception.

Convicted former officer Jeffrey Walker is expected to spend days on the witness stand testifying against his long-time colleagues.

Walker admits he planted evidence in a suspect's car and stole $15,000 from him.

Defense lawyers for the six defendants call Walker an unfit officer and unreliable trial witness.

The trial is expected to last about 10 weeks.

Prosecutors say the defendants beat and robbed drug suspects and stole large sums of drugs and cash.

In the wake of the indictment, hundreds of drug convictions have been reversed and scores of civil-rights lawsuits filed.
