Philly Gets Its Own Foursquare Badge

The new badge rewards Foursquare users for checking in to five Philadelphia landmarks

Social media junkies rejoice.

Philadelphians now officially have access to their own badge on Foursquare, the location-based check-in service that rewards users for sharing their location. Foursquare badges "are little rewards you earn based on your check-in habits," says the Foursquare website.

Thanks namely to the design and curation of the Philly tech bloggers at Geekadelphia, the brand new Phanatic Badge rewards Foursquare users for checking in at five of the 67 places listed here (note: if you’ve already checked in to more than five of these places in the past, your next check-in will get you the badge).

"When we organized our #visitus badge contest in January, we got some amazing entries from people in Philadelphia," Erin Gleason of Foursquare tells NBC10. "We already had plans to make a Philly city badge soon, so when we chose the winners we decided show some love to a few of our other favorite lists from smaller cities. After we announced the #visitus badge winners, we reached out to Geekadelphia, which had submitted some of the most popular Philly lists in the contest, to help develop the final list and badge. And we've already gotten an overwhelmingly positive response from Philly residents!"

On the list are landmarks like the LIberty Bell, the Rocky Statue, the Academy of Natural Sciences and more. But it also includes newer popular spots like Indy Hall, Yakitori Boy and more. Or as Geekadelphia puts it, “the badge copy had nods to Always Sunny and beloved spots like Dalessandros, with a throwback Liberty Bell to adorn your profile.”

For those unfamiliar with the service, Foursquare is the three-year-old startup that reported over 15 million users worldwide back in December. It’s a location-based social networking site for mobile devices where users can “check-in” to venues to receive points, sometimes badges and to compete with friends.
