Philly Cop Fatally Shoots Armed Man: Police

Man shot and killed by police in North Philly Tuesday.

Authorities say a Philadelphia police officer has fatally shot a man who fired at them with an assault weapon.

The shooting happened around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday in north Philadelphia, where police were responding to a report of shots being fired.

Police say officers responded and found a man crouching with a semi-automatic weapon. Chief Inspector Scott Small tells The Philadelphia Inquirer that the officers told the man to drop the gun, but he began firing at them.

One officer returned fire, fatally striking the 30-year-old man in the head. The department's internal affairs and homicide units are investigating the shooting.

The officers were not hurt.
