Tuesday, I wondered if PhillieBot marked the beginning of the end for humanity and the rise of the machine.
One day later, I’m not as concerned. PhillieBot’s pitch bounced to the plate -- not the ideal first outing.
All joking aside, however, PhillieBot was built by an incredibly talented, intelligent and dedicated team of UPenn engineers over a two-month period. No matter how this first pitch panned out, the team should be commended for their efforts.
It was engineered and built by Penn engineers for the Philadelphia Science Festival, the city’s two-week celebration of science and technology. Wednesday’s first pitch is part of Science Day at the Ballpark, a collaboration between festival organizers and the Phillies meant to “showcase the physics of baseball and other interesting bits of science and technology that are part of America’s favorite pastime,” according to a press release.
