Philly One of the Country's Quirkiest: Survey

Most states only have one quirky city. Pennsylvania, however, houses two of the quirkiest cities in the US according to Travel and Leisure.

On a list of the 20 quirkiest cities in the U.S., Philadelphia ranked 18th and Pittsburgh came in 13th.

New Orleans, where β€œthe offbeat culture is so dominant that it’s become mainstream,” took the top spot, Travel and Leisure reported.

The mag suggests a few Philly destinations well-known to locals, each with their own odd charm.  Suggestions include the Mutter Museum, where one can admire old and abnormal body parts, and the Eastern State Penitentiary, which once housed Al Capone.

Natives of the City of Brotherly Love add to the quirkiness, characterized as β€œan ironic combination: loving sports without seeming to be athletic themselves.”

On the other side of the state, Andy Warhol's influence is still felt in Pittsburgh -- one of the reason's the Steel City is considered quirky.

The two Keystone State cities got their spots on the list based on the magazine's America's Favorite Cities survey, which asked readers to rank cities on a variety of features like romantic locales, thrift shops and craft beers.
