Suspected DUI Driver Strikes, Kills Teen in Philly: Police

A teenager was struck and killed by a suspected DUI driver in the Hunting Park section of the city Sunday night, according to police.

The 17-year-old boy, identified by police and friends as Adelso Matos, was riding a bike on the 600 block of Cayuga Street at 6:39 p.m. when he was struck by a car that police say ran a red light. Yariel Rodriguez, a friend of Matos, told NBC10 the driver ran a stop sign however.

"The guy had ate the stop sign and hit him," Rodriguez said. "And he flew over the windshield and he was lying on the floor."

Louis Martes told NBC10 he heard the accident and ran into the street.

"He needed CPR so I told everybody to move so I could do my job," Martes said. "I tried to do the best I could but I just couldn't keep up with him."

Matos was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:15 p.m. Matos' friend Omar Khalil told NBC10 about the last time he saw him alive.

"He said, 'I'm gonna meet up with ya'll guys later,'" Khalil said. "He said, 'I'm gonna go to the other side.'"

The 28-year-old driver of the vehicle was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. Police say the charges against him are pending.
