Robber Stabs Philly Taxi Driver After South Street Pickup

A Philadelphia taxi driver managed to driver himself to the hospital after being stabbed by a passenger he picked up along South Street.

Cabbie Jaswent Mann picked up the would-be robber at 4th and South streets around midnight and began driving down 4th street in the city's Queen Village neighborhood when the fare -- who Mann said didn't appear to have a weapon when he picked him up -- told Mann he had a gun and wanted his money.

A struggle ensued and the fare was able to attack Mann with a knife through the plastic divider.

"He attacked me -- give me money -- he put a knife on my neck," Mann told NBC10. "We struggled and he cut my hand."

Mann handed over around $70 in cash to the robber -- described as being a clean shaven man in his 20s standing around 6-feet tall -- before the thief darted out of the cab toward Fitzwater Street, said Philadelphia Police. [[368484721, C]]

Mann initially tried to trail the suspect but lost him a few blocks later. Mann then drove his cab to nearby Jefferson University Hospital where he was treated and released early Thursday.

Chief Inspector Scott Small said he hoped that surveillance video would help track down the robber. Around noon Thursday, police released a surveillance image showing the hoodie-wearing suspect.

Anyone with information about the assault is asked to contact Philly Police.
