Philadelphia Public Transit System Ranked No. 5 in America: Study

The rankings, compiled by Walk Score, calls the new rankings the “only national, qualitative rating of access to public transit.”

Public transportation and accessibility in Philadelphia is getting some national recognition.

Walk Score, whose mission is to promote walkable neighborhoods, conducted the first-of-its-kind research that evaluated residents’ overall access to public transportation in 25 major markets. The Seattle-based company calculated the transit score based on open public transit data and by assigning a “usefulness” value to nearby transit routes based on frequency, route type and distance to the nearest stop on the route.

“Walk Score’s transit ratings are a great way for people to quickly and easily understand how well their home, neighborhood and city is served by public transit,” said Harriett Tregoning, Director of the Washington DC Office of Planning, in the official release.

New York City tops the list with a score of 81, followed by San Francisco (80), Boston (74), Washington, D.C. (69) and then Philly.
